From the brochure...
The Design
When Cheoy Lee
Shipyards commissioned renowned Naval architect, Charles Wittholz to design the Wittholz
53, the prerequisites demanded exceptional performance, ease of handling combined with the
maximum degree of structural strength. It was further specified that the hull
integrity be combined with the basic elements inherent in all Cheoy Lee sailing yachts'
grace and beauty. The result of Cheoy Lee's rigorous requirements and the expertise
of Charles Wittholz has forged a graceful and responsive yacht that is quick and dry, and
embodies every luxurious appointment and every convenience available.
The Performance
Carrying 1300 square
feet of working sail area in the cutter and sloop rig, the Wittholz is capable of easy
cruising at 8.5 to 9 knots. Under power with a standard 80 HP engine, the Wittholz is
capable of speeds of 8 1/4 knots and can cruise for 500 nautical miles on 200 gallons of
fuel.... |

4/8/22 Update - We have never seen any other CL
Wittoltz 53’s, and would love to know that there are others out there. Ours
is ketch-rigged, and the stats we’ve been using are slightly different from
the ones listed in the original brochure, and so would like to know if we’ve
been wrong all this time, or if the brochure was wrong (or was specifically
for the sloop rigged model). For example: we were told that our ballast is
27 tons (the brochure reports 19 tons), and that our draft is 7’9” (the
brochure reports 6’9”). (Though we could probably measure the draft
ourselves, we can’t actually weigh the boat!) We changed our home port in
2020 to New London, CT after sailing mostly in the Buzzards Bay out of
Portsmouth, RI for the past 19 years. Now we mostly sail in and around Long
Island Sound, but occasionally get up to Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod Bay, and the
Maine Coast. We’re always on the lookout for other Cheoy Lees, and would
love to compare notes with other CL Wittoltz 53’ owners. We can be reached
