Visitor's Name: Chris Georgiades Homepage URL: Boats Name LAN TAO Boats Designer J. Laurent Giles Year Built 1964 Length 25 ft. Model Vertue Sailing Area Med. Greece Comments: Its a very pleasant surprise to find out about the existance of this website. I am very happy with my boat, which I own since 1992. It took much effort to bring her to the condition she is now but, when I see the result, I consider myself a very lucky man. A Vertue is a wonderfull boat to sail with in any weather. Very elegant, sturdy and seaworthy, she has given me a lot of pleasure untill now. Naturally, a wooden boat must always be taken care of but this kind of work is very rewardind. I still have several questions about Vertues and I hope I could communicate with other owners who have also been through the trouble of a major refit. Maybe we could help each other. In case anyone has a copy of the so called "Blue Book" ("Stelda, George & I") by Peter Woolass and is willing to sell it to me, or at least let me read it, I would be glad to hear about it. Also, if any Vertue-owner knows how exactly an old qme-windvane works, please let me know about it. You see, I have the equipment (probably with one part missing) and I can't find out how to use it. Greetings to everybody. |

SailingAreaSF Bay, California Coast CommentsWe've remodelled the interior with new pilot berth and settee on port side, galley and nav station on starboard. We also refurbished the head with new sink and countertop and Lectrasan. We encased our keel in fiberglass (West System epoxy) with a barrier coat, and refinished exterior brightwork with Cetol Marine Sikkens (which also works well on the interior). We also re-did the main and mizzen booms because the glue had failed - put wooden dowels in with epoxy and glued the sitka pieces back together, coated with epoxy, and painted for UV-protection. Plans for this year are to install portholes in the main cabin and refinish masts. Any helpful ideas would be appreciated!

SailingAreaGULF COAST, BAHAMAS, CARRIBEAN CommentsI have converted this from a ketch to a sloop with a taller rig aluminum mast. Also added pilot house to main salon area with 55 gal diesel and 300 lb batteries under new main salon floor. will relaunch this summer. we will see how it goes.
SailingAreaFlorida West Coast CommentsAcquired in September 1997 from an owner who took immaculate care of her. Black hull with red and gold water line stripe and white cabin house. Teak decks in great shape but constant maintanence. Learning more about caring for them everyday. Love the boat. Planning 2 month cruise to the Bahamas Feb., Mar. and Apr., 1999.

SailingAreaNewport Beach, CA. CommentsWe acquired this lovely boat in March 1998 (then named "Adios") and have been intensively restoring her since (which will go on for several years). While working on her in San Pedro we met Robert Chave and "Firefly", and much to our enjoyment/education were able to swap stories and sails on our Cadets. In comparison to "Firefly, "Pearl" is a Mark I as she has the teak dorades, etc. One of these days I will get a scanned photo to you as she is looking pretty good (we restored the exterior first). Thanks for the excellent web site!

I do have plans for this boat and would be happy to copy them for other owners. Have owned DAZZLER for 13 years.

SailingAreaGreat Lakes(Lake Michigan) CommentsHave owned this "head turnin" classic sloop since 1985. Purchased her in Ft. Lauderdale, made two trips to the Bahamas before bringing her up the East Coast to the Great Lakes. One of the few Great Lakes boats with a varnished spruce mast! Now berthed in Manistee, Mi until retiring in a few years and heading back South for an extended cruise. Upgrades constantly underway....now beginning replacement of the teak decks! Happy to hear from other Cheoy Lee owners, particularly in the Great Lakes area. Also will discuss our approach to the deck replacement project as it progresses.

SailingAreaGalveston Bay, La Porte Texas CommentsSunday Music has all the touches of the classic Cheoy Lees. Dragon carving and anchor cutouts, teak deck, spruce masts, secure and dry sailing. Carefully maintained since she was acquired in 1977 in Key West. Originally commissioned in Fairfield, Conn.
SailingAreaSan Francisco Bay CommentsI "inherited" my boat several years ago. I'm learning how to sail and keeping her fit. (lots of wood to varnish, etc). But the demand (which includes time, money, and skill) is more that I can handle at times but I want to keep her. Some views (and support) would be welcomed. Bay sailing during calm seas is what I'm most comfortable with. My boat is still in good basic condition and I want to keep her that way...I would like to hear from other Cheoy Lee Offshore 27 owners who are willing to share their experiences on how they are keeping their boats in good shape and improving their sailing skills.

SailingAreaMed- South France, Spain, Greece, etc. CommentsWow! This website is getting always bigger and better!!! SailingAreaColumbia River, heading to Mexico CommentsWe have been living aboard for approx. 11 years now, 6 of which have been on our Cheoy Lee, Jasmine Isle. We have extensively modified both the interior and the exterior of our boat. We plan on heading to Mexico and points beyond for a 5 year cruise next July. We have a copy of the original brochure and would be happy to send a copy of it and a copy of our boat as she is currently. Since we are getting ready to go cruising, and being fussers and putterers, she seems to change a little bit almost every week. It is so great to find a website about our favorite boats! You've done a great job with it! --Kim Taylor, Jasmine Isle--

SailingAreaFLORIDA WEST COAST CommentsAs with all Cheoy Lee's, our girl is a real head turner. We have kept her as traditional as possible with off white hull and Pacific Blue trim. At present, she's getting new glassmate batteries installed. We have yet to install a refrigeration system, but it's high on the list! We say that she can have cocktails for six, sails four comfortably, sleeps two and has room for one very important dog!

SailingAreaCentral Chesapeake Bay CommentsI've recently become a Cheoy Lee owner and am looking forward to the challenges of caring for this unque vessel. Bon Bon soon to be True Lee is in the water and sailable, but in need of alot of TLC. So any advice would appreciated, espcially with; wooden mast care, teak decks, and diesel engine up keep. I did buy the book 'THIS OLD BOAT', which seems to be loaded with suggestions. I guess time will tell. BTW GREAT WEB SITE!
SailingAreaChesapeake Bay, Virginia CommentsI have receintly purchased this boat, which is in need of a severe restoration. Her deck is shot and is a long way from seeing water again. However, I do so love her lines and have huge hopes for her. I am unsure of her exact model name or even if she is a Cheoy Lee. The title says she was made in Yokosuka, Japan... so that puts her linage into question. However, she has all the right details to make her a 32' ketch (companionway to starboard, molding on the bow, the high boards around the cockpit, reverse wooden wheel, etc.) If I am mistaken about the make of this boat, please inform me. If her history is true, please welcome me to the family of Cheoy Lee owners. I thank you in advance for any help and details you can offer. Sincerely David Hungate
SailingAreaSan Francisco Bay & coastal cruising. CommentsI am trying to locate the WENDAWAY, a sistership to the ROSE. I lost track of the WENDAWAY in early 1997, when she was offered for sale by Larsen Marime Services, Hammond, IN. At that time, WENDAWAY was located in Beaufort, NC. I believe these boats are the only two "SeaMasters" in North America. Would like to contact present owner. Any information or leads would be appreciated. Thank you.
SailingAreaEastern US, Bahamas, Live aboard for 10 years! CommentsNot all Cheoy Lee owners are sail. We anchor out, cruise and live aboard. Ours is a displacement hull, 8 knot cruising boat which is a wonderfull home. Currently undergoing complete restoration "on the hill" in St. Augustine, Fl.

SailingAreaFlorida and Bahamas CommentsWe had a Newell Cadet from 1969 to 1985 called "Lotus." The present boat was purchased new in Fort Lauderdale. The Pedrick 36 sails well to windward and has the best characteristics of a modern hull. We have won some racing trophies with her. We recaulked and bunged the decks not long ago, if you would like to know more about that let me know.MER

SailingAreaChannel Islands,CA,USA CommentsWe're currently in the process of restoring the brightwork. SailingAreaCommentsHi, Just a follow up to my previous visit, I believe more than two hundred and seventy Vertues have been built, mainly in wood, with thirty five GRP vessels now in commission. I'm lucky enough to own one of the sixteen Cheoy Lee built boats sail number 126, works number 1132 built in 1962/63 to Lloyds 100A1 and maintained in that class until 1976. Although rare , last winter the boat yard here in the UK had three Cheoy Lee Vertues laid up so it was great to swap experiences. I was fascinated to see the extract from the sales brochure, would it be possible to obtain a copy I wonder? Regards, Vic Overton

SailingAreaSan Francisco Bay CommentsJust purchased the boat in March, and now working on three years of deferred maintenance. Electrical system needed extensive work, and Perkins 4-107 had to have a major rebuild. The boat has a lot of potential, and I look forward to many years of enjoyment.

SailingAreaSeattle CommentsHi James, Thankyou, thankyou,, thankyou, for your efforts in putting together such a wonderful site. As a proud owner of one of the lesser known models of Cheoy Lee, I've been keen over the last 5 years to swop tales aboutt the Offshore 28. I was fortuneate eneough to buy it from a friend who did little to change her from the day she left the factory, ans she kept some of the origonal documetnation. I'll E-mai lwhat details I have on hull, spars, and equipment, once I have transcribed it, and scanned a suitabel picture. Keep up the good work Russ Waughman |
