Comments: I joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1978 after finishing high school in western Pennsylvaina. I was later assign to a small boat station on the Palmico Sound. It was while working there on the intracoastal waterway I made my mind up. Now several years later, not quite there, I know I'll complete my dream. Your web site was quite a bit of inspiration for me to a dream which had almost faded away. I have two more years to complete school. I have to fight the urge to leverage it all now to get her. Everything in good time. Mine is coming thanks John

Comments: Its a very pleasant surprise to find out about the existance of this website. I am very happy with my boat, which I own since 1992. It took much effort to bring her to the condition she is now but, when I see the result, I consider myself a very lucky man. A Vertue is a wonderfull boat to sail with in any weather. Very elegant, sturdy and seaworthy, she has given me a lot of pleasure untill now. Naturally, a wooden boat must always be taken care of but this kind of work is very rewardind. I still have several questions about Vertues and I hope I could communicate with other owners who have also been through the trouble of a major refit. Maybe we could help each other. In case anyone has a copy of the so called "Blue Book" ("Stelda, George & I") by Peter Woolass and is willing to sell it to me, or at least let me read it, I would be glad to hear about it. Also, if any Vertue-owner knows how exactly an old qme-windvane works, please let me know about it. You see, I have the equipment (probably with one part missing) and I can't find out how to use it. Greetings to everybody.

Would you like me to mail it or get it scanned? I'm very interested in the maintenance side. How about gathering a database of design/construction weaknesses and how these have been solved by present (or previous) owners? I would certainly like to contribute to this.

I am shopping for a boat, and #1 on my list right now is a 1938 sloop built by Cheoy Lee -- I will definitely want to join if I wind up owning the boat, and the availabiliy of such a great source of connections and information is a definite plus in favor of buying the boat. We've remodelled the interior with new pilot berth and settee on port side, galley and nav station on starboard. We also refurbished the head with new sink and countertop and Lectrasan. We encased our keel in fiberglass (West System epoxy) with a barrier coat, and refinished exterior brightwork with Cetol Marine Sikkens (which also works well on the interior). We also re-did the main and mizzen booms because the glue had failed - put wooden dowels in with epoxy and glued the sitka pieces back together, coated with epoxy, and painted for UV-protection. Plans for this year are to install portholes in the main cabin and refinish masts. Any helpful ideas would be appreciated!

We acquired this lovely boat in March 1998 (then named "Adios") and have been intensively restoring her since (which will go on for several years). While working on her in San Pedro we met Robert Chave and "Firefly", and much to our enjoyment/education were able to swap stories and sails on our Cadets. In comparison to "Firefly, "Pearl" is a Mark I as she has the teak dorades, etc. One of these days I will get a scanned photo to you as she is looking pretty good (we restored the exterior first). Thanks for the excellent web site!

Have owned this "head turnin" classic sloop since 1985. Purchased her in Ft. Lauderdale, made two trips to the Bahamas before bringing her up the East Coast to the Great Lakes. One of the few Great Lakes boats with a varnished spruce mast! Now berthed in Manistee, Mi until retiring in a few years and heading back South for an extended cruise. Upgrades constantly underway....now beginning replacement of the teak decks! Happy to hear from other Cheoy Lee owners, particularly in the Great Lakes area. Also will discuss our approach to the deck replacement project as it progresses.

I "inherited" my boat several years ago. I'm learning how to sail and keeping her fit. (lots of wood to varnish, etc). But the demand (which includes time, money, and skill) is more that I can handle at times but I want to keep her. Some views (and support) would be welcomed. Bay sailing during calm seas is what I'm most comfortable with. My boat is still in good basic condition and I want to keep her that way...I would like to hear from other Cheoy Lee Offshore 27 owners who are willing to share their experiences on how they are keeping their boats in good shape and improving their sailing skills.

We have been living aboard for approx. 11 years now, 6 of which have been on our Cheoy Lee, Jasmine Isle. We have extensively modified both the interior and the exterior of our boat. We plan on heading to Mexico and points beyond for a 5 year cruise next July. We have a copy of the original brochure and would be happy to send a copy of it and a copy of our boat as she is currently. Since we are getting ready to go cruising, and being fussers and putterers, she seems to change a little bit almost every week. It is so great to find a website about our favorite boats! You've done a great job with it!

As with all Cheoy Lee's, our girl is a real head turner. We have kept her as traditional as possible with off white hull and Pacific Blue trim. At present, she's getting new glassmate batteries installed. We have yet to install a refrigeration system, but it's high on the list! We say that she can have cocktails for six, sails four comfortably, sleeps two and has room for one very important dog!

I've recently become a Cheoy Lee owner and am looking forward to the challenges of caring for this unque vessel. Bon Bon soon to be True Lee is in the water and sailable, but in need of alot of TLC. So any advice would appreciated, espcially with; wooden mast care, teak decks, and diesel engine up keep. I did buy the book 'THIS OLD BOAT', which seems to be loaded with suggestions. I guess time will tell.

BTW GREAT WEB SITE!

I have receintly purchased this boat, which is in need of a severe restoration. Her deck is shot and is a long way from seeing water again. However, I do so love her lines and have huge hopes for her.

I am unsure of her exact model name or even if she is a Cheoy Lee. The title says she was made in Yokosuka, Japan... so that puts her linage into question. However, she has all the right details to make her a 32' ketch (companionway to starboard, molding on the bow, the high boards around the cockpit, reverse wooden wheel, etc.) If I am mistaken about the make of this boat, please inform me. If her history is true, please welcome me to the family of Cheoy Lee owners. I thank you in advance for any help and details you can offer. Sincerely David Hungate

Hi,

Just a follow up to my previous visit, I believe more than two hundred and seventy Vertues have been built, mainly in wood, with thirty five GRP vessels now in commission. I'm lucky enough to own one of the sixteen Cheoy Lee built boats sail number 126, works number 1132 built in 1962/63 to Lloyds 100A1 and maintained in that class until 1976.

Although rare , last winter the boat yard here in the UK had three Cheoy Lee Vertues laid up so it was great to swap experiences.

I was fascinated to see the extract from the sales brochure, would it be possible to obtain a copy I wonder?

Regards,

Vic Overton

Hi James,

Thankyou, thankyou,, thankyou, for your efforts in putting together such a wonderful site.

As a proud owner of one of the lesser known models of Cheoy Lee, I've been keen over the last 5 years to swop tales aboutt the Offshore 28. I was fortuneate eneough to buy it from a friend who did little to change her from the day she left the factory, ans she kept some of the origonal documetnation.

I'll E-mai lwhat details I have on hull, spars, and equipment, once I have transcribed it, and scanned a suitabel picture.

Keep up the good work

Some of the "offshore 40"s you indicate were marketed by Cheoy Lee as Offshore 41 (40'9") The offshore 40 was 39'9" - similar from the waterline up, but the 41 has a modified full keel - some refer to them as "split keels". I have owned "tiger lily" for 3 1/2 years and she is a remarkable sailing boat. As far as I've been able to tell, she is the only "yawl" version of the Offshore 41 that I've been able to locate. If she has a sistership, I'd love to know. Ray Richards did a particularly nice job in the (as I understand it) 2 years that he did the design. She is graceful, elegant, and attracts attention whereever she goes. hope to hear from you

This page seems to be sailing only. Can we power Cheoy Lees join in? My power trawler was built of GRPin Hong Kong and owned by Caltex for twenty years as their company boat here in Hong Kong. She's on her second set of engines, twin 210hp 3208 Cats. with a V drives. She has a 15ft beam which give lots of space down below and a great upper deck. I've had her for a year and use her on short runs most week ends around Hong Kong. I heard there was one sister boat in Hong Kong but no longer. Anyone out there who has a similar boat I'd love to hear from you.

We purchased Dragon Myst in Feb. 98 from the fellow who had owned her for the last 11 years. Her teak decks have been removed and the core in the foredeck has been repaired by drilling through the fibreglass and injecting resin and glass filler beads. The repair was done by the previous owner who lived aboard her for 5 of the 11 years that he owned her. The deck is firm and the repair seems to be very well done. I believe that she was repowered sometime around 1984 as she now has a Volvo MD2 15 hp diesel. The factory brochure listed the Atomic 4 as the engine offered.

I had an e-mail forwarded to me from Taylor Newell's daughter Ruth, just a while ago. Of all the designs which Newell produced during his career, the Offshore 27 (Newell Cadet) is the one of the one's which he had built for himself for his own use. Ruth is seeking the present owner of this boat, once called "Ripple", which had a factory installed aluminum mast, and the designer's name on a commissioning plaque in the interior. There was also a half model of the hull on the door separating the two cabins. The boat was last seen ten years ago on the Connecticut River.

Patience is just now completing a total rebuild and restoration. I've owned her for over 25 years and maintain her in concours condition (for which she has acquired a number of trophies. She is one of the famous Giles Vertues and, to those who know, nothing more need be said about her. If you don't know what a Vertue is, start by reading "My Old Man and the Sea" and work backwards from there to Humphrey Barton's 1950, "Vertue XXXV.".... No, she is not for sale, unless you make me an offer I can't refuse! Nobody has yet, but there's always a first time!

Comments:
"ANAK" ('Child' in Tagalog - also the title of a hauntingly beautiful song by Phillipino singer Freddy Aguilar) is a modified Midshipman 40 custom built in 1979/1980. Her modifications include a deeper keel, bowsprit, Hood Stoway in-mast reefing on main a d mizzen, Hood roller furling inner and outer foresails, forwd/aft deck boxes. Her original engine was a Perkins 4-236 which I have replaced with a Yanmar 4JH2E (50HP). She was on the UK Lloyds register for the first ten years of her life and cruised extensively around the South Pacific. Unfortunately the second owner didn't care too much about boat maintenance and as a result ANAK, a though structurally sound, had become very neglected. ANAK came fully equipped with every conceivable '80s cruising 'goody' most of which is servicable although I have removed the B&G DF equipment. In addition I have all the original drawings including ke l redesign done by Mr Luders. Internally she has been modified mostly in the aft cabin which now has a stbd side fore/aft double berth - port side are chart drawers and larger head/shower. Main companionway stairs have been redesigned to increase storage. I've been refitting her for the past year which has included reengine, rewiring, hull gelcoat renewal. I also removed the teak deck (which was shot) filled, faired and sprayed with nonskid. In time I'll probably reteak - anybody with any experience of te k subsitututes ? Interior refit is ongoing - as always. First shakedown sail was last Sunday - which went well despite catching the infamous HK Bagfish. Whilst a different boat to Sawadee (a CL 35) they both share very similar construction - read strongl built. 'Sawadee' skipper Wayne Robinson and myself will get together and produce pictures for inclusion in this BB if anyone is interested. Concerning other CL's - I know of an offshore 40 that lives in Waikiki Yacht Club and a Midshipman 40 on the Chesa eke that is for sale - I'll dig out the numbers if anyone is interested. Keep in touch - a CL owners group could grow into something big !

Comments:
Hello, fellow Cheoy Lee owners, pleased to finally make contact with others who enjoy the luxury of owning, maintaining and sailing these fine yachts. I have owned "SAWADEE", a Cheoy Lee 35'for three years & hope this will be a partnership for life. One o my regular crew was so impressed with the style of my Cheoy Lee that he bought a Cheoy Lee Midshipman I am sure you will hear from him soon. Unfortunately due to the economic downturn of the Asia region, sadly many of the few remaining C L's are now bein sailed out of HK. Within the last three months; 'Koel' a Pedrik 36' departed these shores for good, she is now in the Philippines cruising on to the USA; 'Innisfree', Cheoy Lee 35' sistership to my boat, has also just left HK for good, bound for Singapor ; and'Silver Dawn' a 36' the design unknown but it is similar to the Swan 36' is now on route for Vancouver. As far as I am aware, besides my 35' and the Midshipman 'Anak' there is only one remaining Cheoy Lee, a Pedrick 36' 'Beluga II' in HK and as she i currently for sale who knows how long she will remain. Anyhow I can report that Choey Lee Shipyards is sill operating and I am in contact with John Cannon, their sales director, who is willing to offer information and advice if he can. Information on pas records is a little scant however as the company policy seems to concentrate on current models and of course sales. Finally, should any of you fellow Cheoy Lee owners ever be in Hong Kong and fancy a day's sail in your Cheoy Lee's home waters I would be more that willing to oblige. One thing we do well here is enjoy a good sail to the many seafood restauraunts situated on the many small islands aroung HK. Also we spend many a weekend sailing around Lantau Island (where many Cheoy Lee's were born) across the Pearl River Estury to Macau to sample fine Portugeese wine and food. Which is just - well worth having a Cheoy Lee for! Looking forward to hearing from fellow owners and swapping stories and advice, wishing you all fair sailing. Wayne Robinson "SAWADEE"

I’m a proud new owner of a Choey Lee 1965 Bermuda Teak 30’ called “The Orient Express”. She’s in very sound shape for her age but will need some attention before she is ready To sail. I would love to hear from others working to restore these beautiful vessels.

Name of Boat: Shun Feng
Model: Luders 30
Year: 1972
Length: 30 ft
Boat Designer: Bill Luders
Comments:
Purchased the boat a year ago in Iowa. Shun Feng is being renovated and hope to have her back on the water by 2000. A fun project and a beautiful boat! Glad to see a site for the Cheoy Lee boats. Currently the boat is under a temp building with teak deck removed and half the bottom paint gone. Will be spending most of the summer readying the hull for teak deck, paint, etc. Next winter will turn my attention to the interior.

Name of Boat: Pegasus
Model: Offshore 31
Year: 1969
Length: 31
Comments:
During the late '70's and early '80's I owned a Cheoy Lee Offshore 31 called Pegasus. She was ketch rigged and had a factory installed bowsprit. I sailed her throughout the Northeast and sold her when I bought a Mason 43 in 1984. Last I heard the boat w s being sailed out of the Connecticut River. I'm only curious as to her condition and whereabouts and not interested in repurchase. Has anyone seen this boat?

Name of Boat: Here and Now I
Model: Cheoy Lee 30
Year: 1978
Length: 30
Area of sailing: Great Lakes
Comments:
This is only our second year with "Here and Now". She isn't as fast or as roomy as a more modern boat, but she doesn't look out of place docked next to a row of vintage 8 metre yachts at the RCYC. The keel centre- board and shallow draft get her into all manner of small and interesting places. Her previous owners ventured across the Atlantic with her, but we are quite content to enjoy her on the lakes.

We are not able to read the boat's names and owners easily because of the color of the print. Maybe navy or black print would be more easily read on monitors that aren't so great. We are really glad someone started a cheoy lee web page. We know many other owners who we will have contact you. Will also send a picture. We keep our boat on the Cohansey river during the winter (on the Delaware Bay) and at Tolchester, Md on the Chesapeake during the summer. My husband has done extensive work on our boat- new teak deck etc., etc, Connie Schuchard
